Lowell C. McAdam is president and CEO of Verizon Wireless, the premier wireless provider with the nation's most reliable wireless voice and data network. Lowell McAdam said that Verizon will support Android, Google's new platform for phones and mobile devices.
Android is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications. However, Verizon Wireless has joined the Linux Mobile (LiMo) Foundation and has announced plans to adopt the open source software platform. Linux-based phones will be available from Verizon next year.
LiMo Foundation is an industry group that was founded by leading handset makers. Their goal is to collaboratively develop a comprehensive Linux-based mobile software stack that can be modified easily and used at no cost on a wide range of hardware device (Motorola, NEC, NTT DoCoMo, Panasonic, Samsung, and LG.)
Both platforms have very different technical approaches to the same problem and offer their own unique and distinctive advantages. Verizon could offer a selection of handsets for each platform and allow consumers to choose.
Verizon wireless is providing a free operating system, which expects to be more reliable then any other. It is providing Linux operating system. It expects to be successful because it brings together software companies, handset makers, and carriers on a software platform that will make it cheap and easy to make many different phones. "We expect that Linux Mobile will rapidly become our preferred operating system," Malady said. "As the development community looks at how best to bring new applications to the marketplace, they should check out LiMo and Linux Mobile first.” Linux is a special operating system because it is a powerful open source system where anyone can pitch in ideas to make Linux better. http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2008-05/15/content_8177381.htm
